Memorial Weekend Safety

Safety For Memorial Day Weekend

Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial kick-off to summer. It is also one of the most dangerous times to be on the road. The combination of a 3-day weekend along with parties and more people on the road leads to more traffic accidents and fatalities. 49th Street Bail Bonds wants you to be safe over this Memorial Day Weekend. Here are a few tips to help stay safe:

•Don’t drink and drive! Approximately 44% of all traffic fatalities that happen over this weekend have alcohol as a factor
•Don’t run red lights. There is around a 27% increase of red-light runners during this weekend. Be aware that the cars around you might run that light so pause an extra second or two before going through an intersection
•Allow extra time to drive. There are more cars on the road so travel will take longer
•Slow down in construction zones. There is a reason the speed limit is lower in these areas (to protect the workers and you)
•Don’t become an aggressive driver and watch out for the aggressive drivers around you. Road rage rears its ugly head when traffic is heavy
•Take breaks to stretch your legs, have a snack, and use the restroom

During Memorial Day weekend, there may be also be DUI checkpoints set up. A DUI checkpoint, aka a sobriety checkpoint, is where the police block the road and pull over vehicles. If you encounter a DUI checkpoint, you will likely be asked for your driver’s license, registration, and proof of insurance. If the police officer thinks that you might be impaired, then you can be asked to take a breathalyzer test.
