Have you decided to do your holiday shopping online this season?
One of the biggest online shopping days is Cyber Monday. Being able to shop from home, the office, or your phone is a major convenience. However, you need to protect yourself from hackers and fake sites.
49th Street Bail Bonds offers these tips for staying safe on Cyber Monday:
•Shop from a secure connection. Always look for the https lock symbol when making a purchase online. Do not use unsecure public Wi-Fi spots to make your holiday purchases.
•Shop from a secure computer. Install anti-virus software on your computer and phone. Don’t risk letting hackers have your personal information.
•Use your credit card and not a debit card to shop online. Credit cards have better fraud protection than debit cards.
•Shop directly from a store’s website.
•Shop at websites that you trust.
•Watch out for fake coupons.
•Have a strong password and don’t use the same password for every transaction.
•Watch out for email scams. Double check emails to make sure that they are actually coming from a true store. Many hackers use addresses that are similar or misspelled from an actual store.
•Don’t give out too much information. Sites should only need information regarding the sale such as credit card number, name, and email address (to verify the purchase or send a receipt). Be wary of sites asking for information such as your social security number or password.
•Keep track of your transactions.
•Check your bank and credit card statements to make sure there are no fraudulent charges.
•If you don’t receive your items, then make sure to follow-up. Contact the company and if that doesn’t work, then contact your credit card company to advise them that you paid for an item but never received it.
Online shopping security should be a priority all year long. Hackers know that consumers are shopping online from Black Friday up until the actual holiday so make sure to follow the above tips to keep your information secure.
