Imagine that you and your partner have discovered that she is pregnant. You may or may not be overjoyed with the news, but you think you are the father and take responsibility for the child. Flash forward a few years, and you and your partner have broken up, and she announces that you really aren’t the father of this child. What happens? Can you determine paternity? Do you have to pay child support if the child isn’t yours? What happens if you don’t pay child support?
49th Street Bail Bonds wants to help answer these questions for you.
How to determine paternity?
DNA tests can determine paternity. This test is the most accurate way of establishing if a man is the father of a child. The DNA test is considered the best way to determine paternity. A DNA test is conducted by either a blood sample or by getting a swab from inside of a person’s cheek. The accuracy is the same whether the test is conducted with a blood sample or a swab from the cheek. If the DNA patterns between the mom, child, and alleged dad match on every DNA probe, then the likelihood of the man being the father is 99.9 percent.
What if you have a paternity test and it determines that you aren’t the father of the child? Do you still need to support this child? What happens if you decide that since you aren’t the father then you aren’t going to pay child support any longer?
Unfortunately, until the courts determine you are no longer responsible, you must continue to support the child. Trying to disestablish paternity is difficulty and has various requirements that go with it.
Failure to pay could result in:
- Your wages being garnished, which means the courts will automatically take the child support payment from your paychecks.
- You could end up in Jail.
Did you or someone you love end up in Jail?
