Sextortion

Do you know what sextortion is?

49th Street Bail Bonds wants you to be aware of this crime. In essence, sextortion is using or threatening to use sexual images or information such as nude photos to coerce the victim into providing sexual favors or to have the victim commit crimes for them. Sextortion can effect children, college students, and adults. Sextortion is an online crime. The suspects use the internet to solicit children and college students to perform sex acts or a striptease and then the suspects threaten to post the videos or images unless the victims pay money, commit crimes, or perform more sexual acts.

In one case, a 13-year-old girl named Amanda Todd was targeted. She briefly showed her breasts during a video chat. The suspect then wanted more and threatened to send the topless photo to her friends unless she gave him a “show”. This poor girl refused and the suspect released the video to her classmates. She was verbally abused and even beat up. She told her story on Youtube and eventually committed suicide. Her harasser was eventually found and charged in connection to her suicide. The suspect was charged with sextortion, internet luring, criminal harassment, and child pornography. This is just one case of sextortion.

Many other cases are out there. Scammers are using sextortion to have people launder money for them. The scammers pose as a love interest and persuade the victims to take nude pictures or videos and then turn around and use the pictures and videos to blackmail the victims.

Sextortion can even take place when a person’s computer is hacked. The suspect takes these pictures and then threatens to blackmail the victims. For example, Jared James Abrahams pleaded guilty to extortion and unauthorized computer access. He hacked into the computers of unsuspecting women including Miss Teen USA, Cassidy Wolf. He hijacked the webcams on the computers of these women and took pictures of them while the women were changing their clothes. He then demanded that they do what he requested or he would send out the photos. Abrahams turned himself into the FBI and was sentenced to 18 months in federal prison. He pleaded guilty to three counts of extortion and one count of unauthorized access of a computer.

As you can see, sextortion can take many forms. No matter what, it is a crime and can ruin people’s lives. 49th Street Bail Bonds, the bail bondsman on 49th street, encourages you to be aware of this crime and to talk with children and college age students about the implications of this crime.
