Human Trafficking

What is Human Trafficking?

Unfortunately this is something that has been in the news all too often and is getting more and more popular. Human Trafficking is defined as “the transporting, soliciting, recruiting, harboring, providing, or obtaining of another person for transport: for the purposes of forced labor, domestic servitude or sexual exploitation using force, fraud and/or coercion.”

49th Street Bail Bonds wants to make you aware that human trafficking is happening everywhere including in Florida. According to CBS News, the number of human trafficking cases have increased more than 50% in Florida as compared to last year. Part of this increase is due to public awareness. More and more cases are being discovered and increased training and recognition of the signs of human trafficking are uncovering cases. Both female and males can be victims of human trafficking.

Human trafficking falls into three main categories

1)sexual exploitation by a non-caregiver
2)sexual exploitation by a parent, guardian or caregiver
3)labor trafficking.

Quite a few of those exploited are runaways or those addicted to drugs. However, human traffickers target victims from stable families as well. Those victims usually fall prey to the human trafficker’s due to low self-esteem or because the traffickers promise the victims something they want such as a modeling career or the latest clothing. Human traffickers “groom” potential victims by being kind and attentive. They provide the victim with items that the victim wants be it the latest electronic device, clothing, drugs, or alcohol. After they are under their control, they demand payment. They manipulate and take advantage of weaknesses.

Many of the victims are kept drugged, beaten, or threatened with violence in order to keep them compliant. The abusers find their victims anyplace that young adults like to hang out including bus stops, bars, strip clubs, beaches, and shopping plazas.

Human trafficking is happening right here in Clearwater. Recently, there was an article about a man named Giovanni Pergamo. Mr. Pergamo has been charged with human trafficking (intent and knowledge) after being found with two girls. The 17- year old girl says that she was pressured to have sex with strangers to get narcotics and alcohol. The 16-year old girl said she was drugged. The girls were allegedly told to wipe off their fingerprints and to not brush their hair so that no DNA would be present in his car or house. Thankfully, the Clearwater police department was able to retrieve these girls and reunite them with their parents.
