Domestic Violence Awareness Next Month

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Domestic violence continues to be a problem throughout Florida. According to Florida law, domestic violence is defined as, “any assault, aggravated assault, battery, aggravated battery, sexual battery, stalking, aggravated stalking, kidnapping, false imprisonment, or any criminal offense resulting in physical injury or death of one family or household member by another family or household member.” So much of this goes on in all communities. What you may think is a normal household on the outside, the inside can be quite different!

Here are a few signs of an abusive relationship:

• Being controlling. Does your partner want control of everything?
• Isolating you from friends and family
• Cruel to animals or children
• Keeping money from you
• Insisting that you don’t work or go to school
• Does your partner behave in two different ways (a public and private way)?
• Does your partner threaten to kill you or themselves if you leave the abusive relationship?
• Does your partner threaten to take away or harm your kids?
• Humiliate or embarrass you with constant put downs or name calling?
• Does your partner hit you?

These are a few ways that an abuser attempts to control a relationship and are all forms of domestic violence. If you need help, please call 1-800-500-1119 from anywhere in Florida. Don’t wait and think things will improve, it may be too late if you do.
